  • THS05: The Role of Melanin in Dermal Uptake of Cigarette Smoke from Clothing

Purpose of the study: 

Suzaynn Schick, PhD and her associates from the UCSF Department of Medicine, are studying how melanin affects how skin absorbs nicotine. Melanin is the chemical that gives our skin, hair, and eyes color. Does melanin protect people or adds to their risk?

Requirements to join study: 

  • Between the ages of 18 and 50 
  • Non-smoker (no more than 50 cigarettes in your life)
  • Have lighter or darker skin
  • Cannot be pregnant or nursing a baby

Time: 

1 online meeting and 5 visits to the Community and Clinical Research Center at Pride Hall on Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital campus (ZSFG) and about 15 hours active effort, over 1-2 months.

  • CAN03: Exposure to Secondhand Cannabis Smoke in Public Places

Purpose of the study: 

Suzaynn Schick, PhD and her associates from the UCSF Department of Medicine, are studying studying the effects of exposure to secondhand cannabis (or marijuana) smoke. This study is asking whether breathing and being around secondhand cannabis smoke has any health effects.

Requirements to join study: 

  • Between the ages of 18 and 50 
  • Non-smoker (no more than 50 cigarettes in your life)
  • Cannot be pregnant or nursing a baby

Time: 

1 online meeting, 1 online questionnaire, and 3 visits to the Community and Clinical Research Center at Pride Hall on Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital campus (ZSFG) to give samples and spend 1-4 hours with us in a public place. In total, it will be about 6-10 hours active effort.

Compensation:

$120-186 (depending on how long the cannabis smoke exposure is)
